Social Paediatrics

Mission Statement

To work in collaboration with other professionals to improve the health of children in need.

The Service

The Paediatric Department at Mater Dei offers this service at Aġenzija Appoġġ for the medical assessment and management of children who are being maltreated, or who are at risk of being maltreated, and also children in care. This service is run by a Paediatrician who works in close liason with social workers. Regular clinics are held at Aġenzija Appoġġ premises and referrals for medical visits are received from all the services within Aġenzija Appoġġ, although the majority of referrals come from the Child Protection Services.

The aim of the paediatric assessment is to identify signs of maltreatment whilst at the same time addressing any medical, developmental or behavioural issues of concern. The Paediatrician also attends case conferences and liaises with other medical professionals involved in these cases.
