Antonella Mizzi

Director Child Protection Directorate

Antonella Mizzi is a Warranted Counselling Psychologist and has been practising in the social sector for over 22 years.

She joined Aġenzija Appoġġ as a Professional Residential Worker in 2001 and later moved to Child Protection Services where she occupied the role of a Psychology Officer in the Intake Team. After completing her Masters in Counselling Psychology in 2007, she joined Sedqa Psychology and Family Therapy Services as a Counselling Psychologist and in 2010 she was appointed Service Area Leader for the Psychology and Family Team.

In 2012, she was instrumental in the amalgamation of the then Appogg Therapeutic Services and Sedqa’s Therapeutic Services whereby, amongst others, she shifted the service to being a more generic one that could better meet the demands while also offering more opportunities for new emerging professions to create an interdisciplinary team. She was promoted to Psychological Services Manager in 2018 which at the time was part of Sedqa and later in 2022 the service moved to ACTS.

Antonella has a vast experience in working with addictions, adolescent issues, teen-parent relations, psychological growth, depression, anxiety, loss, child abuse, domestic violence, trauma and psychometric assessments amongst others. She is also a specialised and accredited Trainer in Positive Parenting and has received training in facilitating co-parenting groups for separating/separated parents. She also received training in Parental Alienation and Parenting Capacity Assessments.

Apart from this strong track record as a professional with a proven experience in management, which make her uniquely placed to lead the Child Protection Service, Antonella is also currently a member of the Specialised Fostering Board.

She has also supervised trainee psychologists on placement and is a part-time lecturer at the University of Malta where she also acts as a supervisor of dissertations for undergraduate and post-graduate courses at the Department of Psychology within the University’s Faculty of Social Well-being.
