The Substance Misuse Outpatient Unit (SMOPU), commonly referred to as the Detox Centre, is located at St Luke’s Hospital and forms part of the national services provided by Aġenzija Sedqa. SMOPU offers low-threshold interventions for individuals with substance use disorders, addressing their medical, psychological, and social needs. The multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, social workers, and 2 pharmacists, with a strong emphasis on harm reduction.

Methadone maintenance therapy for opioid dependence is a core component of the SMOPU’s services. However, the unit also provides treatment for other substance-related conditions and medical complications arising from substance use. Access to SMOPU requires referral from Aġenzija Sedqa’s Addictions Community Services or other relevant NGOs. Following an initial assessment, clients are referred for appropriate care.

In addition to opioid treatment, SMOPU provides interventions for alcohol use disorder and other substance use disorders. The unit is also increasingly addressing behavioural addictions, reflecting a rise in such cases.

SMOPU also operates specialized clinics, including the Genito-Urinary Clinic, Wound Clinic, and Take-Home Methadone Clinic, managed by its medical and nursing staff.
