What is B.A.S.H.?
The B.A.S.H. Programme (Beyond Alcohol and Substance Highs) is designed for students at the post-secondary or tertiary level of education. Rather than using a traditional session format where students sit and listen to a lecture, the programme takes an informal and engaging approach. It is conducted in high-traffic areas such as foyers, canteens, or other common student gathering spaces, making it more accessible and interactive. The goal is not to bombard students with information but to create meaningful conversations, provide guidance, and offer practical tips in a relaxed setting.
The programme consists of three exhibitions held at different times throughout the academic year. These exhibitions incorporate quizzes, interactive games, and discussions to encourage participation and learning in a dynamic way. Each exhibition focuses on a specific topic relevant to students’ well-being and decision-making:
1. Think Before You Drink! – about Alcohol & Drink Driving (November–December)
The first exhibition takes place toward the end of the year, a time when celebrations and social events are more frequent. This session highlights the dangers of drinking and driving, covering legal aspects, potential consequences, and harm reduction strategies. The aim is to promote responsible alcohol use and encourage students to make safer choices when consuming alcohol. Through interactive discussions, students explore ways to enjoy themselves while ensuring their own safety and that of others.
2. Stay Chill, Try a Coping Skill! about Stress Management & Coping Skills (February–March)
The second exhibition aligns with the period when students face assessments and exams, a time often associated with increased stress and anxiety. This session focuses on stress management techniques and coping skills, helping students recognize the various stressors they may be experiencing. We emphasize the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, engaging in physical activities, pursuing hobbies, and seeking support when needed. By promoting positive outlets for stress, we encourage students to stay away from harmful coping mechanisms and develop healthier habits.
3. Know Your Facts, For Real! about Addictions & Harm Reduction (April)
The final exhibition addresses the topic of addiction, including its legal implications and its impact on individuals and society. The discussion aims to break the stigma surrounding addiction and explore alternative ways students can have fun and enjoy life without relying on substances. For those who may still choose to use substances, harm reduction strategies are also discussed to minimize risks. The goal is to provide students with practical knowledge and resources to make informed choices about their well-being.
By taking an interactive and informal approach, the B.A.S.H. Programme encourages open discussions and engagement, making it easier for students to absorb valuable information without feeling pressured. Through these exhibitions, we strive to empower students with the knowledge and skills to navigate challenges, make responsible decisions, and lead healthier lives.

“MCAST has been collaborating with FSWS in various forms from its inception in 2001. Lately, the FSWS outreach sessions were replaced by the B.A.S.H. Programme through interactive fun games with a clear learning objective on Alcohol, Stress and Addictions. Students’ feedback on these informal sessions has been very positive. Messages conveyed through these games leave a lasting impact on the students during crucial developmental stage in their life”.

“Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary has collaborated with Sedqa in the past years in their continuous effort to raise awareness among young people on the effects of alcohol and substance abuse. Their outreach focuses on prevention as well as developing healthy coping mechanisms to stress and addictions. Sedqa’s professionals have always been very knowledgeable on all topics and adapted their material to the students’ needs. Their outreach is interactive, innovative and informal, making it an established event in our school calendar”.
