Looked after children and young people are known to be at a higher risk for increased health needs resulting from likely adverse childhood experiences that led them to be placed in alternative care. This specialised healthcare service, led by a paediatrician and nurses help detect to health needs specific to this group and influence pathways and policies that help improve their health outcomes. The LACHS carry out regular individualised and comprehensive assessments in keeping with guidelines issued by the social regulatory standards. The team adopt a bio-psycho-social approach whereby the physical, emotional and mental health needs are taken into consideration. Such assessments allow space for the minor to understand their health history and voice their opinion. Health recommendations are included in the minor’s care plan and also communicated to the minor’s caregivers. The service collaborates with other agencies and professionals to help these minors reach their full potential. The LACHS remains instrumental in advocating towards the best interest of the child and youth in alternative care.
The LACHS also offers consultative services to the adoption team within the DAC as well as meetings with prospective adoptive parents with regards to health reports of potential minors who were freed for adoption.
